What might my results mean? A few ideas to tease your imagination ...

 

Nardoto et al. (2006) Am. J. of Phys. Anthropology 131:137-146 reported the carbon and nitrogen analyses of fingernails from 490 people living in the western United States. They found the average composition to be:

 

(n=490) Carbon Isotope Value (+/-) / Nitrogen Isotope Value (+/-) [permil]

 

            -18.8 (0.8)  /  9.4 (0.6)

 

What if my carbon isotope value is lower than Nardoto's (n=490) value?

 

If your C-value was lower than the U.S. average, it may mean that you consume less C4 plants and less C4-grain-fed meat than the average American.  C4 plants include sugar cane and corn (including corn sugar, such as high-fructose corn syrup).

 

What if my carbon isotope value is higher than Nardoto's (n=490) value?

 

It wasn't. None of the fingernails we have sampled in Norway exhibited values as high as those reported for the USA.

 

What if my nitrogen isotope value is higher than Nardoto's (n=490) value?

 

If your N-value was higher than the U.S. average, it may mean that you consume more fish than the average American.  

 

What if my nitrogen isotope value is lower than Nardoto's (n=490) value?

 

If your N-value was lower than the U.S. average, it may mean that you consume less meat than the average American.
